What Makes a Classy Trench Coat, and Who Should Wear One?
Rupert Bowling asked:
A mans coat is a very personal thing. The very fact that you are reading this, probably means you are some one who would already consider wearing a trench coat. If so, you are in good company! Read on to find out why.
A mans trench coat is becoming an iconic coat. From Humphrey Bogart to Angelina Jolie in Mr and Mrs Smith, the trench coat has been used in films for many years. The most extreme is perhaps the leather trench coat, in The Matrix.
It is interesting to note the history of the trench coat on Wikipedia, where it is claimed to have been developed from the coats worn in the Great War in Europe, however as a retailer, I am more interested in what is enjoyed and available today.
The modern trench coat is a very different beast. It is no longer solely a coat for men, nor is it now associated with the “darker” side of life. You are more likely to see say a short blue trench coat on a lady, than a black leather trenchcoat on a man.
So who should wear one now a days?
Let me ask that differently. Why would you wear one? Well, for several reasons.
Despite all the improvements in technology, modern walking coats are still not the thing to be seen in town wearing. Nor are they long enough to keep your trousers dry. A trench coat is long, designed to keep you dry, and looks stylish. Lets face it, a good trench coat is appropriate dress for wearing with your hunter wellies, l and striding out across a field, and then slipping into your city shoes, and arriving at work in.
How many coat styles can claim that? There should be one in every coat closet. The only question left, is what colour?

Sleek and Sassy In A Belted Trench Coat
Trench coats are among the staples in a chic and fashion- forward woman’s wardrobe. A trench is quite versatile, and it absolutely goes with anything. Whether it’s a casual pair of jeans or sophisticated dress pants, a trench coat is a welcome complement. And for all of the rainbow’s colors, too.
When it comes to versatility, choose a trench coat that’s solid- colored and with minimal details. Black is the color most apt for an all- arounder trench for every season and occasion. A beige trench coat is fashion that blends well with spring. For a touch of variety, go red. If you want to stand out with your feminine silhouette, the perfect choice would be a belted trench coat.
Needing to look 10 pounds trimmer- instantly? Wear a black trench coat. Yep, this is what this sassy apparel can do- make you look sleek.
It wouldn’t hurt if you invest more on trench coats. You’ll be wearing them quite often, anyway. It’d even be more practical if you spend a bit on a good quality trench- you would and could use it for many years. On your next shopping sesh, take more time studying the quality of the garment.
When buying a trench coat, choose the right hemline. The perfect length for any shape is somewhere from right above the knee or shorter. It’d keep your legs from looking stubby. For petite or plus- size women, a trench of this length doesn’t drag their frame down. It’s fashion suicide wearing a coat that shortens your figure. Keep your goal in mind: to create a lean line from your legs and up. Maybe you’re thinking trench coats a la Matrix length. Major fashions don’t. It’s an outmoded look.
Of course, you mustn’t skip the step of picking a piece with the right fit. A slight difference of an inch can offset your figure. You’d definitely look weird if your coat is too tight. A bigger one makes you look..well, bigger, and you’d look puny with a trench coat whose sleeves swamp your arms. If it so happens that the trench you really, really love is in the size different from what you should buy, ask your local tailor for help. You’d need to alter to make the coat fit.
Apply creativity when wearing your trench. Here’s a classic elegant look: a black trench coat, a black pair of skinny jeans and black high heel boots. Or if you feel like setting out of this standard look, swap up the pants with hosiery like lace tights or opaque tights. A more up- to- date ensemble. You’re off to a more modern look with a belted trench coat. Wrap a wide or skinny belt around the waist and you’re good to go.
Classic black is all- around fashion, but if you wish to expand on your collection, try short sleeve or ¾ length sleeve trench coats. For a fun and chic style, pair it up with a scarf. Search for rounded collars, button styles and even prints.
Dress for your body type, too. For those with hourglass, rectangle or apple or inverted triangle body shapes, buying belted trench coats is the best option.
